I was recently awarded the opportunity to design a large scale public art installation titled “Cosmic Growth” located inside Jackson Memorial Hospital Rehabilitation Center in Miami, Florida. This custom terrazzo floor spans over 15,000 sq ft. This project began in 2018 and was completed by early 2020.
Artist Jen Stark’s grand-scale, monumental artwork incorporates terrazzo floors within the facility’s main lobby, cafeteria, north hallway, second floor and each of nine elevator lobbies. Driven by the artist’s interest in hypnotic visual systems that evoke such concepts as evolution, infinity, fractals, and mimetic topographies. Stark’s optical designs are also inspired by mandalas and sacred geometry. For this particular work, Stark responds to the cognitive and neurological connections within human bodies and their action of healing and growth. Stark’s body of work often resembles organic, molecular, cloud-like structures, and are imbued with kinetic, undulating effects that serve to dislocate the viewer from reality into an immersive realm of echoing patterns. Each new layer is shaped by the last one, morphing and constantly changing.
This artwork is part of the collection of Miami-Dade County Art in Public Places program, made possible with the support of the Art in Public Places Trust, the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs and the Cultural Affairs Council, the Miami-Dade County Mayor and Board of County Commissioners. miamidadepublicart.org
